- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ¼ cup cocoa powder (optional, for chocolate)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional toppings: Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, fresh berries
Instructions
- 1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder (if using), and salt.
- 2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until slightly pale.
- 3. Slowly drizzle a small amount of the milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- 4. Pour the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture.
- 5. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble (5-7 minutes).
- 6. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
- 7. Pour the pudding into individual serving dishes or a large bowl.
- 8. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
